The Consultant General Physician is a doctor who deals a wide range of medical conditions. He/She is likely to have an area of special interest such as respiratory medicine or nephrology or endocrinology or cardiology, as well as caring for patients with general medical problems.
Most common clinical areas / procedures leading to a claim of clinical negligence
This will depend on the type of patients he sees. If he has a special interest in respiratory medicine, for example, he will be exposed to the potential areas of negligence of a Consultant Respiratory Physician.
Sub–Specialities / Alternative and Additional job titles
The Consultant General Physician may be known as a Consultant Physician with a special interest in a variety of different sub–specialities such as Respiratory Medicine, Endocrinology or Medicine of the Elderly. He/She may be known simply as a Consultant Physician.
The Consultant General Physician will usually have MRCP or FRCP (Membership or Fellowship of one of the Royal Colleges of Physicians).
The Consultant General Physician may be a Lecturer or Professor in Medicine at a Medical School. He/She may be an Examiner for one of the Royal Colleges of Physicians.
