General description of the work of a Consultant Nephrologist

The Consultant Nephrologist is a doctor specialising in kidney (renal) disease (nephrology). He/she deals with renal failure, glomerulonephritis, pylonephritis, renal dialysis, diabetic renal disease and kidney transplantation as well as medication issues involved in kidney disease.

The Consultant Nephrologist may also be known as a Consultant Renal Physician or a Consultant Physician with a Special Interest in Renal Disease or Diseases of the Kidney.

Usual Qualifications

The Consultant Nephrologist will have MRCP or FRCP (Membership or Fellowship of one of the Royal Colleges of Physicians) after his name.

Academic Appointments

The Consultant Nephrologist may be a Lecturer or Professor in Medicine or in Renal Disease or Nephrology. He/She may be an Examiner for one of the Royal Colleges of Physicians.
